Scientists, writers, painters, architects: the list of famous people who have found their final resting place on the churchyard in Stahnsdorf is long. The graves of some composers can also be found on the wooded grounds, including that of Hugo Distler. The dance of death is one of Distler’s best known works. Inspired by the danse macabre in the Marienkirche in Lübeck in the 15th century, Distler uses numerous compositional elements from the Baroque period.
The Forum concerts are now in their 16th season. In 2004 the Forum of Friends and Sponsors of the RIAS Chamber Choir initiated the Forum concerts to prepare a stage for the singers of the ensemble to experiment on. 62 concerts have now taken place in 58 different locations, one of which was more unusual than the other: cold store, anatomical theater, crematorium, Bauhaus villa, pumping station, district court – a complete list would go beyond the scope of this introduction. But all concerts have one element in common: the programs, usually characterized by chamber music, try to enter into a dialogue between architecture and music. They also offer an ideal space to shed light on the singers’ individual artistic abilities solo or in small groups of changing composition. The 2019-20 season draws audiences to the city’s geographic borders and takes them on a journey of discovery to the north, west, east and south.
